Long Island Sound

Yesterday's storm was more or less a non-event at the shoreline. I had

hoped for snow or fog and found neither. So I used a few neutral dark

filters to smooth out the water. This is one of my favorites. It has

enough blur to convey the motion without turning everything to a

smooth milky mush and does a decent job capturing the solitude of a

cold and quiet Sunday morning. As always, thank you for stopping by

and I appreciate your comments and suggestions..

Interesting! My recollection of the north shore of LI is that the beaches were all pebbly. Or is this from the Conn side?

It's from the Connecticut side. It's been taken at Bluff Point, which is a small, till-covered rocky spit with a tombolo beach towards the west. The beach is mostly sand and shells, with some gravel in small patches. The wave environment must vary quite a bit. Interesting enough, there are also layers of a rather pink mineral in the sand, sorted by the waves. I think they are garnets, but every time I go there I am either to busy watching my kids or too cold from taking pictures. OK, next time I'll bring my hand lens or even take a sample for the X-ray diffractometer.
