Bove Island 6

aepelbacher

Cropped and adjusted in Photoshop. The first three shots of this subject that you see were taken with a long lens without a circular polarizing filter. This is the final of three that were taken with a 28mm lens and with a circular polarizing filter.

This is from my "Road Trip to Alaska" series ... the final of six

shots taken of Bove Island (in this folder). The first three shots of

this subject that you see were taken with a long lens without a

filter. This is the final of three that were taken with a 28mm lens

and with a circular polarizing filter. Any comments or ratings are

appreciated. I'm especially interested to find out which of the six

you like the best. Thank you!

Very nice, Lou Ann. Well-saturated colors, clouds, I guess polarizer helped you a lot.

Compositionally, I'd pick ##2 and 3. #3 my favourite, the best angle, I can enjoy panorama of a beautiful bay+mountains, excellent depth, no any distracting objects in fg. #2 creates good 3D effect due to several (but not many) big trees in bg, however the sky and tops of mountains unfortunately was trimmed. Most serious problems: clouds are overexposed, sky washed. Very sad, that you decided to experiment with polarizer when were making the last three shots, not vice versa. I'd suggest you and anybody else to have a polarizer around at ANY time. E.g. I shoot with it almost 100% of time and even when I need reflections (or even still life) I don't unscrew it. As a benefit you can get good saturation and contrast (with rear exceptions, of course, e.g. poor light available). When the lighting is harsh (sunny midday, no clouds) polarizer can be combined with ND or gradual grey to decrease contrast. The only problem is that you need tripod and maybe higher ISO, because the use of filters requires much slower speed.

The last set of pics as I said above has very good saturation. But only #6 is good in terms of composition, because you used a little bit higher camera angle and tops of multiple trees not blocking most of bg (beautiful water surface). So, I may pick #6 too, but as a third choice. Wide angle lens worked good on all images. So, you seems had a good and productive time. Probably, you may notice it on your ratings and comments.

Michael is referring to aircraft "vapor" trails, Lou Ann, but in this case I think that you are just seeing some cirrus lines that are setting up as colder air moves in.

This is very well done, and no doubt commercially viable if you ever get tired of teaching.

All versions are very nice, some so similar to this one that I got confused. I like this one most. Only if you'd walk a few feet to the right such that the island wouldn't obscured...

I love very much this landscape. It looks like The loch Maree in Scotland (except the island). The sky is superb. Its just a little pity that the left trees are in front of the island, but perhaps it was'nt possible to move to the right.

Beautiful picture, one of your best!

I found the statue of the horse in a mall, for the Derby the people paint many and put them in many different places. Thanks for the comment. :)
