Frustrated with the seemingly endless wet weather, I ventured further North to the

UK's lake district in search of a bit of snow, and eventually found some, albeit high

above the boat house. Your thoughts and comments are always appreciated. Thank

You!

Alf, my very favorite part of "Turned to Stone" is on left -- the detailed of the trees (when this enlarged) and their reflections on the water.  Stunning.  Great title too --- evokes fairytale wanderings... or biblical story, begging what happened here?

Hi Alf, the obvious well composed need not be said but I said it because it's perfect. So well balanced and the subtle reflection is probably what I like most. A very beautiful and relaxing scene my friend.

I really like the delicate pastel tones you've achieved here. The picture is beautifully detailed yet feels so light that it could float off the screen.

Alf, a lovely scene, well captured and developed. The image feels almost painterly. FYI: If you're looking for snow, there's plenty around here. I had to run the snow thrower twice today, and more is on its way.

Alf,   Aside from the tack sharpness of this image and the superb reflections and soft color,  I am struck by the connection between the stone on the mountain or hills and the stones in the boat house.  To me they link up and tie the image together.  I also like the wonderful tranquility here.  I feel as if I learn from you Alf, each time I view one of your images.   Superb.  Larry

This colors palette when snow is melted  and rocks structure look amazing. In balance with upper part the calm water and reflection did the magic.I like the green of pine trees. Is a peaceful mood comes from this composition and as always this no need other words than admire and delight the eyes.Compliments Alf for an excellent work you do.

I like all the textures involved from the course feel of the stone, the softness of the trees and the wetness of the water, very nice elements coming together.

Alf,

The colours in this image are amazing.  Is it Lichen growing on the rocks giving the background the lovely pastel tones?  The boat house provides a focal point or put another way, detail that the viewer can return to after exploring the many elements of this wonderful image.

I agree with what everyone above has said.  Compositionally, for some reason my eye wants to see what is farther right of the green bush on the right.  Is the little rock wall the beginning of a bridge?  Really love the bright tree on the left.  Jeff

Many Thanks for your interest and kind words. The detail in the original size image is even more impressive, I was quite surprised myself.

Thank You!

The only difficult aspect in these parts is deciding where to point the camera : - )

Many Thanks!

It's really gratifying to read that this captured your imagination. For me the whole of the UK Lake District has a kind of magic to it that never seems to fade.

The scene before you is a river and a lake beyond the boat house. The deepest lake in the UK and one of the most scenic. Also one of the most isolated and cold, but even on the most stormy of days it's beauty remains unscathed.

Thank you so much!

I too like the reflections, not least because they are not perfect mirror images, but because the water is slowly moving on this part of the river just before it joins the lake, allowing a kind of painterly effect.

I think the pastel tones were helped a little with the light dusting of snow that was present. Of course the temptation is to increase a lot in processing, but pleased to say I resisted : - )

Sincere Thanks

Nothing I'd like better than to than to visit and take advantage of the snow you have! But for now at least I'll have to make do with the small amounts that we get. I had to travel 150 miles just to get this little bit, but more arrived during the course of the day.

Many Thanks for your interest and positive feedback David.

I felt the same kind of connection (hence the title) the whole area seems to be etched from stone and the boathouse an integral part of it.

I think we all learn from each other Larry and this is the ideal forum to allow exchanges of idea's and to grow.  One of the greatest attractions for me is the photography is seemingly  limitless in terms of what one can learn and therefore I never tire of it.

Sincere Thanks & Best Regards

Many Thanks for your visit and thoughtful feedback!

The light powdering of snow certainly added a milder blend to the colour and the consequential colour of the reflections  It is a relatively sheltered spot and the water although moving slowly, allows some nice reflections. The main lake, just beyond the boathouse wasn't quite as calm : - )

I think it was indeed the combination that seemed to work, no one element could be singled out, but together the colours and textures looked good.

I must admit to not actually knowing what gives the pastel colour you refer to. But I think it is a natural kind of clay that intermingles with the shale like rock.

Boathouses are one of my favourite subjects, they are usually made of local stone and invariably are standing at the waters edge offering a good opportunity for reflections.  I have visited this place in the summer, but it doesn't look anywhere near as good because of the vegetation, both in the water and on the rocky slopes.

Sincere Thanks for your thoughtful feedback Jim.

You really do have an eagle eye!  : - )

The small wall you refer to leads to another building. It too is built from stone and it isn't unpleasant to look at. I think it might be a pump house which governs the amount of water flowing into the lake. But it is relatively modern compared to the boathouse and although I took several wider shots where it is included, I decided that the better image was without it.  (although I might just post the wider angled shot out of interest at some point in the future)

Many Thanks for your thoughts and positive feedback Jeff.

I have seen at least a few of your images that trade on both colors and reflections.  This one exceeds them all, in my opinion.  Indeed, the larger view affords the viewer with a smorgasbord of pastels amplified by texture, all of which are transmuted into soft patches in the water.  In turn, the reflections of the trees seem somehow to have taken root, giving the impression that they grow both in the air and in the water.  The structure, although it adds a bit of "human interest" to the image, doesn't seem all that important to me, when it comes to my appreciation of the image as a whole.

Another one to place in my favorites . . .

My best always,

michael

I'm with Michael, I find this to be one of your best.  Top notch composition, beautiful color, detail and depth; not to mention the ambiance of this serene setting, all presented for us to enjoy.  Late to the show but I add my appreciation along with all the comments above... Mike

Many Thanks for your thoughts and keen observations!

The water is unusual in the sense that that area to the right of the boat house is moving faster than that to the left. It is in fact a river which flows into a lake just 50 yards or so more behind the boat house.  But the area to the left is a large bay with relatively still water. This combination along with the prevailing light results in the different textures.

I like to include a man made structure when I can, but I try to ensure it is low key, or at least small in comparison to the element of natural landscape.

I am very honoured that you consider this a favourite.

Best Regards

Alf

Many Thanks for your enthusiastic feedback, very much appreciated.

Just getting to know my new camera, and although very similar to it's predecessor it has one or two slight differences that I am playing with to see what gives the best results.  (Electronic Front Shutter Curtain) Only trouble is I can't remember what shots I used it on : - )

Cheers Mike!

I am really impressed with the high quality of the composition !. The boat house makes the picture even more interesting.Opposed to the tranquil foreground is the ominous land mass in the background that adds power to the composition. Very well done, my friend !.( This would make an excellent print).
