4127 GGO grab web

ImageDescription: Great Gray Owl, Strix nebulosa, takes flight with prey in its left talon. This is our largest owl in north America, standing 27 inches tall. These owls appeared further south than their usual habitat in the far north, during the 2013 GGO irruption. This southern migration happens every four years or so. This visitor made a winter long appearance in Ottawa Ontario. To photograph this owl, I traveled 550 miles from my home in NJ for a one week trip, in temperatures that hovered around Zero degrees F. He and three more of his companions made for exhilarating days of photography.;
