Jim_Dockery_Photos 2 Posted December 4, 2015 Unusual ice formations formed on a mountain waterfall in Washington's Cascade Mountains. Looks like hoarfrost formed, iced up, then water rapidly covered and froze crystal clear over them. Link to comment
DavidTriplett 12,682 Posted December 6, 2015 Jim, I find myself comparing this image to Alain D's glacial ice from Iceland. This one doesn't quite grab me the way those do. Maybe better in color than B&W. I am sure the in-situ experience of this phenomena was fascinating. For me, the translation to photo image is not as engaging. Technically, the image is excellent, including exposure, B&W conversion, focus, and depth of field. Thank you for sharing. Link to comment
Jim_Dockery_Photos 2 Posted December 8, 2015 Thanks for the comments David. I'm afraid I don't actually care for the way I processed the color version, using ACR daylight balance left the ice feathers looking yellow and dull so I increased contrast in this b&w treatment. When I was into climbing frozen waterfalls I often marveled at the beauty I was smashing to bits, but didn't have time to photograph. This waterfall was right next to an easy mountain trail I was hiking so it was simple to approach and study. I shot with my Sony A7rII and wished I had a macro lens, but had to make do with a 55mm.
