color 3 Posted December 2, 2015 Her hand is reflecting sunlight onto her face. I took several photos with that setup. Unexpected sources of light can and do make a difference in how an image is made. Link to comment
Jack McRitchie 150 Posted December 3, 2015 This has the graphic feeling of Russian experimental photography from the '30's or maybe something from Man Ray. Really a strong shot, Chuck, one of your best. Link to comment

michaellinder 16,613 Posted December 18, 2015 Heartfelt congratulations on such a fine image, which deserves much more recognition than the POTD. I looked long and hard at the image before reading your explanation. At that point I was sure that the lighting effects were strictly the result of studio work. I was amazed when I read that the sun provided the backlighting. The subject's fixation on her almost translucent hand is nothing short of mesmerizing. There are two added benefits of your use of the ambient light. One still can discern the tattoo on the subject's left shoulder, and the triangular area on the background wall points directly to the subject, reminding the viewer to remain focused on what's really important in the frame. Outstanding work! Link to comment
