Short season indeed;these nice/big boats only dip in the water for a few short weeks per year....the time to gather the crab quota.Glad you like the shot.

We're wondering- do the same fisher folks need a different boat for each season? Just when we thought we figured out how they made a living, with a succession of short but different species seasons- but, can't they use one boat for the whole thing? If not- wow, what a capital investment!

These bigger boats are required for open sea fishing such as Snow crab and shrimp but have to have gear modification which only a few actually do as the crab fishing is ''relatively'' sufficient (in good years)to make a living;you figure it out at say a 300,000 lbs individual quota at $3.50/lb....this in 6 to 8 weeks. Those whom then modify their rig to do the shrimp thing can add this much more revenue.Lobster fishing on the other hand is done from much smaller boats as it is a close to shore activity;season is not based on quota but on a 8 weeks time limit in which hauls can total 60 to 70,000 lbs @ $4-$5/lbs in good years, but lean years can bring in less than half, sometimes only 1/3 of this;these boats are then modified to fish mackerel(by line) or herring(by net) and decision to modify depends on the outcome(revenue) of the lobster season. Some boats, very few, also fish scallops which again requires a different gear.    In a nut shell, this is how it goes.Sorry for delay in response as I had dropped this your comment between the cracks.

Meilleures salutations-Laurent
