By Barup (DK) just east of the road between Hellested and Karise is

a Bronze Age mound with a magnificent view of the river valley. The

mound is known all over the Danish country as "Elf Hill" - elf king's

residence. Hawthorn on the mound is according to an old legend a

gift from the chief of Stevns. Elves guarded apparently jealously the

gift. At least other legends tell about people, whose horses died,

after having eaten the twigs of the Hawthorn
