Arrow of Time

Nikon D800, Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 2.8/15 ZF.2 Nikon, tripod, Fenix TK51 torch, some driftwood... ;), long exposure, PP in PS CC 2014The curious light trail in the middle (in addition to the star trail on the left) was due to an aircraft departing at HAJ (Hannover Airport). IMO it's an interesting image element, therefore, I did not stamp it. Some of you might know that I love the work of San Francisco based photographer Michael Light and his thoughts about (nature / landscape) photography:"Well, on a deep personal level, I’m very much a romantic and attracted to idealized pastoral beauty. I love idyllic places and the kind of suspension of history they offer. But noble beauty is not enough these days. One must complicate the picture, because there’s now nowhere to “escape” to on the planet in pursuit of a hermetic pastoralism or a redemptive wilderness sublime. Earth is now a human park." An excellent shot, Volker. I love long exposures because they are unpredictable and become very nice surprises. This one has a very calm mood.

Fabulous shot, the the branch just floats in a sea of diffuse light, breaking the rule of thirds just adds to the effect. My only point is the question would it be better if the background light was toned down just a bit?

My apologies, when I looked at it again with my laptops retina display, the background light was perfect, it was my monitor displaying too brightly. However what does stick out is the jet vapor trail left of the upper center, IMHO it disturbs the overall uniformity of the image.

Well after some reflection, on a laptop screen the planes vapor trail just looks odd ( a scratch of white pixels), but no doubt on a reasonably larger 8x10 print the vapor trail adds a nice touch, something zooming through a timeless landscape...my apologies.

Volker.  I thought that this shot was quite peaceful and like the notion of leaving the "human footprint" in it.  I agree with the sentiment in your explanation.  However, the best thing about this shot for me was that it led me to your portfolio (spectacular!).  I will be paying attention in the future.  All the best.  Dana...
