Aerial Food Transfer 6 - Click image to view larger!

1/3200, F5.6 & ISO 500

Handheld shot! The Tercell would hold the kill with his legs and when the female got close he would transfer the kill to his beak waiting to release when the female are a some inches away below him. The kill sort of float in the air briefly before being grab by the female.

Thanks for viewing/comments! This one is number 6 before I got 10 shots but the first 5

were not sharp since the camera took that much time to lock focus. My camera shoot

10 fps and I got 10 shots means that each of these frame happens in about 1/10 of a

second and the whole aerial food transfer for Peregrine Falcons happens in about a

second or so ? ... This makes White-tailed Kite food transfer ... real slow, LOL!

Thanks Bill! I've been trying to get another set like this for the last 2 months with no luck, LOL!  They do the transfer where ever convenient (for them) and sometimes it's too far, wrong side of the light, bad lighting days ... ect . On top of that there's no control on the pose that one would get either. I do wish the kill was intact but no luck with that since this particular Tercel always dressed the kill and eat half before sharing that with the female or the fledging.

You have documented in an excellent manner this typical behavior of these birds of prey, very good the light and colors, ciao Giangiorgio

Grazie Mille Giangiorgio!  I hope to be able to duplicate this again but it's so difficult. I've got them doing this 2,3 times since I got this but the quality is very poor because I was on the wrong side of the light. It's much more difficult than it seems and I was so lucky to got 5 shots (out of 10) . I know of someone who has been shooting this bird for 5,6 years and have not gotten this shot with good pose and quality like this. The other day, if happen just like the time I took this shot and the two person next to me got some shot but I got nothing because I was aiming at the wrong bird (2 adult + fledging). With only 1 second that happen out of no where it's very difficult to catch anything.

Thanks Andrew! To me, this image got everything going for it, good pose, sharp  ...ect. the only thing I wish for more is a full/whole bird  instead of just a piece of meat. This pair tend to hunt for dove, btw.

Tm, your shots of the peregrine falcons are nothing short of spectacular and this one here is super special. we admire the sharpness of the photos, then you add some extra drama like in this one. We really enjoy them all.

You've got a great catch, Tm J! In addition to the moment of the action, I like the detail of the plumage and colors.
A perfect picture!

Kind Regards,

Rosario.

Thank you very much Folks! I appreciate your visit and your thought/comments.

As I mentioned before, I got 10 frames of this but the first 5 was not in focus. I know my camera was not focus but I continued shooting that 1 second of action and got lucky (focus) on this shot number 6 through 10.

Here's the frame before this shot that got a good pose but it's a bit soft in focus

Thanks Mr. Mancil! Your 10 point reflects your acknowledgment of how 'lucky' I was to get this since at 1/5 of a second with no control on pose, lighting ... ect  I have very low hope of duplicating this again.

Here's a similar shot in bad light  :

Thanks Roger!

Thanks Steve! there are at least 2 aeries at Torrey Pines that I've heard of and each nest has 4 fledgings that have been doing mock aerial food transfer /food stealing from what I've heard. I think the one in San Pedro is ... over.

Thanks Janine!
