Cold Front to the Northwest, Hurricane to the Southeast

Landrum Kelly

Hurricane Arthur, the first Atlantic storm of 2014, was approaching the coast of the Carolinas, bringing lots of humid air inland. That humid air was interacting with cooler, drier air coming in from the northwest to produce some dramatic skies.

Hurricane Arthur, first Atlantic storm of the 2014 season, was far to the southeast of Salisbury late in the day, approaching the Carolina coast.  This link shows its path:

The humid onshore flow was being pushed inland, where it would collide with a cold front coming in from the northwest, producing some very dramatic skies.  This shot was made looking out to the northwest, where a strong line of thunderstorms was developing.

The third map down on this page gives some idea of how much dry, "cold" continental air was dominating the U.S. during July, 2014

Those yellow parallel lines and take this picture from the realm of the generically idealistic and pin it in the real world. It's the tension between the two that gives the picture its dynamic appeal.

The yellow stripes are the perfect addition to this composition. To me they are vaguely reminiscent of those day calendars that have the little perforated corners that one can pull off the mark the day. That, in turn, reminds me of the marking of time, which ties in  to the dusky light here. Maybe it's a stretch, but that's where my mind went. I think your framing is brilliant.
