I'm starting to get my feet wet with portraiture. Please be detailed and critical in

your comments. I want to get better, and I would appreciate any advice.

Hey, you've been holding out on us!  This is very good and I particularly like the emphasis on her expressive eyes.  Again, it may just be the differences in our monitors, but it appears to be about .5 to 1 click overexposed.  The added brightness makes the highlights jump out on her lei(?) and the sheen on her face.  See what you think of my redo attached.  All I did was bring the highlights down a tad and burn in the lower portion of the frame to keep the viewers attention on those eyes.

It would be interesting to know your lighting setup.  I only see one direct catch light in her eyes but the shadows are very uniform... Mike

Christal,

If you're just getting your feet wet with portraiture, you must be dipping those feet in holy water!! What a great portrait. B&W very good choice here!! Keep it up! (What camera did you use for this??)

Sorry it took me awhile to get back here.  This was taken at school this summer, and we were trying so many different things that I can't remember exactly what I did.  But it looks like I may have had a beauty dish just above my camera.  And it looks like I probably had some lower intensity side lights as well.  Funny, your version looks really dull on my computer.  It would be interesting to sit with a friend sometime and see how our images look on each others' computers.  Though I do see what might be some highlights on her forehead, now that you call it to my attention.  I think I could spot check those, rather than reducing the overall highlights.  And I also agree that the bright spots in the lei could be reduced, so thanks.  That's what PN is all about!

Holy water, eh?  Well you should have seen how many awful shots I got.  Ha!  This was taken with my Canon 60D and the 24-105 lens.  I SO badly want another camera, but it's a struggle to decide what to go with.  I can't decide whether to upgrade to a crop sensor, full-frame, or jump ship entirely and go with mirrorless.  Stay tuned!  Thanks for your lovely comment.
