Excellent - I love how farmers leave the lone accent trees like this in Europe. I might also try a bit more contrast to bring out the blacks, but that's just me.

Thanks Tim for taking your time. I understand your comment. In fact the temptation is big to increase the contrast. However the landscape and the trees are covered by snow and everything was bathed in light. I am still not sure how to present best such a scene. In my opinion, more contrast is appealing but it does not reflect the real situation. Any suggestion? Feel free to process this photo differently. Karl

Hi Karl,

this is a fantastic image, all elements came together perfectly and you did a good job composing and exposing correctly. I am also tempted to push the blacks a bit, and also to pull the highlights slightly to shift the histogram a bit to the left. Here is my attempt at what I would do. You have seen the scene with your own eyes, so you are left with an impression that we cannot have and we are not influenced by it. My feeling is that this was taken at nighttime and hence a bit of black tones will not hurt. Let me know what you think of my edit.

Best regards.

Peter

Dear Peter,

This is great! Clearly better than my version. And the snow on the trees is still visible.

Such exchange makes photo.net worthwhile.

The photo was shot in the evening towards the setting sun shining through the clouds.

My photo posted here is the result of quite heavy processing with Silver Efex Pro. The original photo is very dark in the shadows.

I think the original of this photo would be a good candidate for the Weekly Post-processing Challenge which I discovered today in photo.net.

Thanks! Karl

The composition and mood of the image is perfect, I do like Peters version too, but I would exercise caution as you don't want to lose the effect of the original image. I always take a "less is more" approach to processing.

Compliments & Best Regards

Thanks Alf, Phil and Ernest for stepping by.

Apart from the technical aspects, this photo is about culture: About the people having shaped this landscape and it lives me wondering about their living in sommer, with the animals, high up there, on the top of the ridges, far away from the villages and from the neighbors.

Your participation on the most recent weekly post processing challenge led me to your portfolio and this image.  That's fortuitous!

A dappled sky, a mountain peak capped with a lone tree, and sunlight filtering through primeval forests . . .  an extraordinary combination.

Beautiful shot. I love the different shades of grey of the clouds and the atmosphere that the moon is making with its rays coming through the trees.
