These are actually lichen - I like to show my superior knowledge- and my ability to click on wikipedia  :) they are interesting

From wikipedia: A lichen is a composite organism that emerges from algae or cyanobacteria (or both) living among filaments of a fungus in a mutually beneficial (symbiotic) relationship. The whole combined life form has properties that are very different from properties of its component organisms.

I should have remembered that this was lichen as someone(maybe you Greg) pointed this out to me on another of my images.When I was younger and working in malaria infested environments,I use to blame memory shortfalls on the daily absorption of Quinine....now I guess it is simply advancing age.Thank you for the observation.
