Hi John,

I'm afraid that many people confuse a pretty subject with a pretty picture.  Her pose is not bad and she is making nice eye contact with the camera.  But there are several things that need to happen that would elevate this from a "girlfriend selfie" to a nice, artistic/erotic shot.  First and foremost is the background.  Nice house, but that table leg is unfortunate.  The overall scene does not add to the subject. You made a good decision to use a wider f-stop so you've blurred the background, but it isn't enough.  You've got some weird lighting that makes her look like she's covered in baby powder...based on the reflection in her eyes, i'm assuming you're using on-camera flash...maybe a diffuser (which does help).  Her left arm would have been more attractive if she'd let it flow down her hips.  I do see some back lighting coming over her left hip and that is good as it helps define her from the background.  Overall the coloration is flat and the image has little visual depth.  I think you could crop this somewhere between her belly button and breasts and you would have a more powerful image.  Please don't take this critique as a negative, I definitely see some good potential in skills, you just need to be much more aware of the environment.

Thank you all for visiting, it's much appreciated. Thank you also Tomek for pointing out the possible clumsiness in the composition. I think frankly that some shading proved necessary in this instance, though I rarely do it, thank you again.

Patrick, thank you also for your time. I enjoyed reading your comment and I appreciate your interpretation. There is however no baby powder, no weird lighting, no flash and no reflectors either. Indeed, the light is on, but its contribution is only minimal. The principle source of lighting is the window in front of the subject, as natural as could be and it is precisely what she looked like, not "flat", not highlighted by any spots either, though it would seem that the muscle tone is visible nevertheless.

As for any "confusion" with a selfie or a girlie style shot as you say, I don't think that those accustomed to my work will find much. I take largely casual portraits, mostly in the home, my hope being that the candidness of the approach and setting will lead to a more involved participation of the model such as some may find in this and other images of mine, but that is for the viewer to decide. I do not work in a studio, as Newton rightly said "a woman does not live behind a white sheet of paper".

More often than not I opt for the black and white version, which tends to reduce the glamour component of a photo and hence this type of comment, in this instance I regret not having done so, but other images from the session will follow which hopefully will serve to compare.

Nice bokeh plus on this one! I mean very well lit, perfect body and face, cute pose, great environment and plus slight bokeh! Very, very attractive, John!

Best regards
