This is a scene right out of a Flash Gordon serial. I don't know if you're old enough to have seen that old Buster Crabbe pot-boiler but this could stand in for the capital city of Ming the Merciless on the planet Mongo.

The tones, rather dark are well integrated in the composition creating a special atmosphere and the building on the left adds to the composition a lot!

Old enough, indeed, Jack.  Your comparison is a huge compliment, since I truly admire the style of cinematography/photography from the 1930s.
