Very natural looking candid, nice blurred background and priceless expression on the toad's "face"!

On one of my last visits to our Ecology Park in August, I had the

most delightful visit. I was looking for birds of butterflies to take

images of, when suddenly these two young boys abruptly dropped

their bicycles, and with much excitement asked me if I'd noticed that

the Leopard Frogs were very few at the pond??? They quickly

showed me their 'catch' and hoped I was excited that they planned to

restock the pond with frogs and tadpoles!!! I explained that I was just

taking photos, but was so interested in what they had to tell me.

They were rough and tumble, muddy, and what I noticed most of all,

NO CELLPHONES in their hands. Just FROGS!!! They reminded me

so much of the fun my brothers used to have when we were young.

You sought out your afternoon fun in the most exciting spots you

could. Their place was a muddy pond in a wooded area a few blocks

over and it would have made their day if I'd gone over to it to find

more frogs and snakes, but I'm afraid I was not that anxious to get

knee deep in the muck. I had such a great time with them. They

proudly showed me the biggest of the bunch, tried posing them for

me in what they thought would be the best 'shots' to share. I wish I'd

taken my pad and pencil to write more down. I recall this boy was

Riley. He and his friend spent about an hour with me talking about

their summer fun and their favorite places to catch frogs and snakes.

It was soon time for them to rush home for supper. As they left, I

recalled asking myself just how Cell Phones and Video Games

replaced the fun we had with 'nature' when we were young. As I

watched them ride away I said 'thanks' for how refreshing their

impromptu visit was, taking me back to fun memories of my

childhood. I'll insert a few more of their 'frog friends' in this post.

(thanks for your visits and thoughts expressed, Gail :)

Yes, the frogs seemed to like the attention as well!!! It was so good to see 'boys' just doing what 'boys' used to do on hot August Afternoons - years ago that is. They were so polite. Riley uttered a word that was not rude at all, but his friend scolded him as if he was being rude. They were such great boys. I thought about their parents and quietly applauded them for raising such nice children.

Wonderful pics and good true story, you are right, curiosity is dying because of the cells, they forget the adventure and focus on a tiny screen. It is very sad. Thanks for sharing. Hugs

Cute boy, back lit with a nice touch of sun ray, cute frog in his hand and wonderful integration of the sunlit background with beautiful colors and most suitable bokeh! Bravo, Gail!

Best regards

Lovely sharp photograph, there is a great warmth in that boy's eyes! And such a wonderful story to accompany it!

It reminds me of the times when we used to get the train to "Freshfields"  there was a number of lakes and we used to catch Newts,  frogs and the Natterjack Toads, these were collected in a shoebox and taken home to add to our backyard pond. Of course on a few occasions the lid accidentally would come off the box whilst on the train and there would be screams from the ladies that encountered frogs & toads leaping onto their feet..........some people have no sense of humour : - )

Thank you for sharing this Gail, as you probably now realise it awoke a lot of happy memories for me!

Warm Regards

When I was working on this image, I thought of you :). This lad was, as I said - so refreshing!! I had seen some children looking for crayfish in the river, but I guess it was the personal exchange I had with the boys that was so engaging. Thanks so much for sharing your story about your times enjoyed as a boy. While all these electronics are so convenient, I do think there is too much time spent on them these days. I realize parents have to moniter it, but also I think, now, it is so important to help their children enjoy what nature has to offer. My daughter Shauna goes out often with the children to Nature Trails etc. She finds their moods are refreshed by their encounters with nature. Too much time spent indoors with their 'phones, video games, Facebook etc.' often affects their how they interact with each other.

so very good to hear from you Pierre!! Your critique was very uplifting. I have 3 brothers, so frogs, snakes, toads, mice, etc. were often around, and often used to tease me mercilessly!!
