Just recently I read Margaret Livingstone's "Vision and Art - The Biology of Seeing" - where she explained how our brain (in this case our visual system) is very good at throwing away information and focusing on local differences (that's why probably our gaze shifts towards the few sharp lines).

I've also become very interested in seeing and the biology of perception. recently. There's a lot of good stuff on You Tube.
