I met Patrick while I was wandering an alley in my neighborhood on a recent evening, looking for new graffiti or anything that might catch my eye. He works for a nearby car dealership and mentioned that he enjoys drawing with ink and paper. Turns out he's also an incredibly talented model builder. He built a detailed model reconstruction of his grandfather's country home where he spent some memorable summers. As he scrolled around the photos on his phone I felt myself transported into this vivid world that was almost like a second life video game sensation. Perhaps it was the isometric point of view for the photos, which were reminiscent of those 1990s era video games. But his fond and detailed memories resonated with my own memories of my grandparents' rural Texas home, which became the first stable home I'd found as a teenager after a rootless childhood. I still miss that home and dream of it often.
