From a photographer's POV, the very thing that's been bad for business - a slumping economy and empty parking lots - has been great for me artistically. There aren't many active businesses here but the property is well maintained, not neglected. (It's almost too well maintained - I have to be quick to photograph graffiti and tags because they're painted over almost immediately.) So there's an odd, austere beauty to the place.

Ten or so years ago, this parking lot would have been filled on a Friday night. Not as photogenic.

Incidentally, I just happened to have the camera and tripod set up while I was chatting with my friend Gary. I've been trying to decide whether to keep my old perspective correction lens, which I hadn't used much since finishing an architectural project several years ago. I noticed the stopped-down iris created a star shape in the parking lot lights that seemed to mirror the fake windmill ice dispenser kiosk. And this fellow in yellow along with his companion just happened to be strolling by. They would have been blurred by the 4 second exposure, but he stopped for a moment to check his phone. Love those magical bits of happenstance.
