Here's a B&W that I converted at the suggestion of Craig Allen. How do

you like it? It has all 10 of the gray zones or values in it. Please compare it

to the color version in the next image over. Which is your preference? Any

constructive critiques on the conversion are appreciated. Thanks. Larry

I like this very much!  For me this has a greater impact than the color version.  I have found that when the colors do not provide a brilliant show, but the composition is still solid, you can sometimes "save" an otherwise okay shot when converting to B&W.  I see this shot as a great example of this.  You (and actually I mean me) can spend forever making minor tweaks here and there but at some point we just have to call it good.  I see a few things that I might tweak but in all actuality this is a very nice conversion and the tweaks I'm thinking of have a tendency to become "the cat chasing his tail".  Again, very nice job and you have a very strong image.  Thank you for trying this as I've had a couple of quite negative responses to some of my suggestions, all of which I give as "only my opinion" and are intended to give the photographer another option they may not have considered.  This is feedback that I value but rarely get.  I am currently working on a B&W conversion of one of my images at the suggestion of another PN photographer.  Take care and keep up the good work.

I have to say that Craig seems to have nailed this The B & W for me does have greater impact and mood and whilst the composition remains the same in both images the layers and shades seem to be more accentuated in the B & W version.

Nice work Larry!

Best Regards

Thanks for requesting my input, Craig.  I have commented on the image and won't repeat my comments here except to congratulate you for a fine first light creation and for getting up so early.  You have earned your due reward.  Larry

Hi Larry- Nothing I like more than a good B&W & yours is one with as you say,"All the 10 zones". The beauty of B&W is the ability to create different moods easier than with colour..Like the low dark threatening clouds at the beginning & the stream flowing towards the small white clouds , signalling better times ahead Do you have a special B&W processing program. I"m getting the itch.best Regards-Ross

Ross,  Thanks for your compliments.  Most of the credit goes to Craig Allen who inticed me to convert the image.  This illustrates the benefit of PN. Yes, I am currently using Nik Software's Silver Efex Pro 2, which is a plugin that comes as a package with other handly plugins that I use all the time now.  Nik Software is owned by Google.  Check it out online and take advantage of the free trial period.  I don't recall the price, but it's quite reasonable.   Thanks again for your comment, Ross.    Larry
