Jaime was the first from a family of migrant farmworkers to graduate from high school and attend college. He shared his story with me as we rode the #27 bus last week. He taught at a Montessori school, studied at the seminary in Fort Worth, and said his dialysis schedule - three times a week - gives him time to study the bible.I was a dialysis nurse and, of course, was curious about some details. He showed me his fistula - a surgically joined artery and vein created near the skin to provide easy access and good blood flow for the hemodialysis process. Jaime is also diabetic and showed me the emergency kit he carries everywhere - insulin, candy for occasions when his blood sugar drops too low.Retired now, he sometimes rides the bus just to get out of the house. Fort Worth buses are cool, clean, about as comfortable as a bus can be, and most drivers are very considerate toward seniors and folks with disabilities.I happened to be accompanying my mom that day on one of her many medical appointments - mom's large motorized wheelchair is too large for most personal vehicles, so she usually takes the city buses which have wheelchair ramps and safety straps.
