I've found these little birds to be tolerant of my presence, but this is extremely close.  Well done, a perfect portrait... Mike

I was standing very still for a few minutes waiting for any of the variety of birds in the area to come within camera range when this little guy landed on this branch about 5 or 6 feet away.  Couldn't believe my luck & was sure, even if I didn't make a sudden movement, that he would be gone in an instant.  I slowly raised the camera, let the lens focus, and let go with a burst of half a dozen frames.  I recomposed after realizing I'd cut off his tail when trying to focus on the eye and let go with another burst.  This was my favourite of the bunch.  I thanked him & he was gone!  I love it when things go right.  :-)  Best, LM.

Great clear image of this beauty, with an interesting story how you were so lucky. I have try many time with nothing to show. Warm regards.

Patience is a virtue, as is the ability to stand still  in a near comatose state for an hour or more.  (a trick I picked up in the military many years ago) :-)  As you've pointed out, luck is an essential element.  Happy hunting!  Best, LM.

Wow Len this is stunning. Great clarity and detail with perfect background blur. I rarely see any woodpeckers here in NJ so these images are a real treat. Thanks for sharing Len.

Best Regards,

Holger

My field guide tells me these birds should be found in the eastern half of the USA and Canada anywhere south of James Bay to the southern tip of Florida.  Quite common.  You probably have some near you.  This little guy almost begged to be photographed & I was more than happy (thrilled?) to oblige.  Best, LM.

Great clarity, wonderful color including the uncluttered green background and nice composition.

Woodpecker! Wonder who came up with a name like that?

Very impressive colors and technical quality, the background in belonging to the theme colors and well out of focus as it should be! Perfectly done, Len!

Best regards

Yah, a bird that pecks on wood, hmmm, what to name it?  :-)  Background thanks to the 200mm used at close range.  I'll take the credit\heat for the composition.  Thanks for your visit.  Best,  LM.

I'm well pleased with the result.  Close enough for using a 'kit' lens.  See my reply to Tony, above, on the background issue.  Best, LM.
