Old lover at the cemetery

very good colour balance, striking person. the roses add an element of colour saturation but...what is this portrait about? why is the man looking sad, is he going to a funeral? I feel your image lacks in context: I mean usually one uses backgrounds to give a sense of place and circumstances. This is lacking here and one is left wonthering what is happening..

I disagree with Lorenzo's comments. I personally think what's off-frame is equally as important as what's on-frame, or put another way what you omit is as valid as what you include. There's a lot of information here: the red flowers (affection?), the Arabic newspaper (cultural context?), the stance behind the wall (hesitation perhaps?), the facial features (character!), the tidy bricks (standard of living..), the nice shirt(perhaps an occasion?). There's even more to think about when contrasting the available elements. I think there's more than enough subject matter in this frame.

 

Think about it- if more background and setting means a better photograph, photographers would walk around with nothing but panoramic cameras :)

 

Now, despite me quite liking this frame, I think the frame might be slightly better with less depth of field- the detail on the last brick on the wall wasn't too crucial for me. Might be a limitation of this camera though.

 

Overall, I think it's good composition, nice colour, great effort!

Let me echo Ryan's comments about the information here. This is the kind of photo that prompts you to wonder what's going on, given all the elements.

Credible job of composition. Initially I was a bit put off by the brightness of the wall on the right side but that became less important as I looked at the image, wondering what he was approaching on the darker side. Nice work.

What a wonderful portrait... There's a combination of anticipation & resignation at this corner of bright & dark-- in how the subject's eyes peer, how surprising the bright flowers are, from the stubble of beard, to the crinkle of the wrinkle at the corner of his eye.

The first impression I got is he's waiting for his lady love , a bit apprehensive, but waiting. This image really works for me.

Thought provoking image. Is he visiting his lover, or is he about to put flowers on a grave.
