Constructive criticism like yours is one of the best tools I have to improve as a photographer. For your information, I shot the photo at 1/400th of a second at f6.3 and at ISO 100. I think some of the items you addressed were based on my postprocessing of the image. Not only do I use NIK Silver Efex Pro 2 to do B&W conversions; I also use it to add detail, structure, and to modify the tonality. And, by the way, I did think about trying to remove the railing in the bottom right, but I decided to let it stand. I saw the subject as making a quick move to his right to avoid hitting that obstacle. For whatever it's worth, I've never had any training in photography. For all intent and purpose, my techniques comes down to trial and error. There you have it! Link to comment
