Amy, I tried a desaturated version, and it just didn't do anything for me--except that the fuzzballs around the lights were not as large or obvious. 

So. . . the appeal is about the color against the black, or about nothing at all.  I did crop it to get the strong diagonal from top left to lower right, but one either likes it or one does not.  Most people will not, I'm afraid.  I like it enough to try it with the D800E on a tripod, so that I can shoot it at a lower ISO and get higher resolution with much lower noise.  It is not the kind of neighborhood where one wants to hang around for very long.
