I've never seen a Sanhill Crane with that color but then I only been encounter Sandhill Crane only one time in Alaska (above the arctic circle) and he took off which resulted in  ... butt. shot!  :-) . TFS!

My wife was reading about this tonight.  The bird searches for food in mud that contains iron which stains the bill and the feathers when preening.  The mud where I live contains iron.  All of the Sandhill Cranes that we see are colored like this.
