You got some good detail in the face and plumage!! I don't know that I have seen one of these, I usually see the Red Headed Woodpecker. Nice capture.

This is a great shot- around me these guys are too shy, impossible to get close to even with 250mm.  So congrats first on catching one up close, and another congrats for a sharp, well composed photo!

Great shot of the elegant bird with that good backlight and super background.These are very rare in this area and I was fortunate to have one choose my feeders and elect residence for the winter of 2011-2012;I was the envy of all the birdwatchers of this area and of course I managed to take a few shots.Good work!

Thank you all for taking the time to comment, and for your encouraging words.  These are shy birds, but I spent the winter in a cabin in woods on the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountain.  We had a lot of snow and the birds were grateful for the seed I put out for them and I was able to get this shot from an armchair through the open patio door!  Gillie
