Thanks for viewing/comments! ... I know, I know you folks had HB up to

your neck by now :-) - Well, the significant of this shot is that it's done with

a 70-200mm + 1.4x TC III + 20mm extension tube and not with the big gun

500mm F4. Just trying to get closer, increase image size wiith more depth-

of-field. The 500mm + extension tube have a very narrow DOF .

thanks for the tech details Tim, they do help, especially if I ever am able to get a nice lens like that. Another beautiful capture of Mrs. Anna !! I imagine you don't get must rest at this time of year!! I know I wouldn't !!

well done! kind regards, Gail

Thanks Gail! Glad to hear from you :-) .  Here's what I see, if you look at Janine Linning HB shots you will see that her image is very good. To me it's really great if you consider Janine shoot with a Panasonic with small sensor but she got great shot because she can get very close to the HB and shoot in macro mode. The problem with macro mode is that it gives you great detail but very narrow depth of field.  My 500mm lens has a minimum focusing distance of 15.4 feet and I get good shot at that distance but since I am greedy I want to get closer to the bird (since sometimes I can get within 3,4 feet from them)  and the way to do that is to put extention tube (just a tube that push the lens away from the sensor) or extension tubes to get the macro effect with the 500mm lens. When I stack all my tubes on (36mm, 20mm, 12mm) with the 500mm I can get as close as 9, 10 feet. This will give me almost fullsize bird in a shot and that will give me better details. However, as I said before, when you stack extension tube on a lens to push it out you can get closer but you get the macro effect which mean very narrow depth of field which will result in only half the bird sharp. That means I have to close down my lens to F16 or more but with natural light I can not do that at low ISO and I end up shooting at F8, F9 and most of the time I don't alway get the whole bird sharp. Only when I shoot with multiple flashes  close to the bird then I can close the lens down to F16, F22 .. to get everything sharp. But you need a setup to know exactly where the bird would be to set the flashes up.  OK, so the only recourse fo me (since I can get close to the bird) is to reduce the focal lenth of the lens, hence, I now try to shoot with the 70-200mm with extension tube. Shorter focal length give you more DOF .. like a wide angle give you more DOF than a telephoto.
