The elephant, which is made out of flowers, is named Clemente. The tonic water brand "Markham" brought him to Bilbao in celebration of the 28th edition of El Sol, the Latin American Advertising Festival. Markham has decided to present the elephant as a gift to the Euskalduna Conference Centre, after seeing how the people of Bilbao took him to their hearts.

The sculpture owes its name to the explorer Sir Clements R. Markham, who introduced cinchona to India, and it also pays tribute to Jeff Koons's Puppy, which is one of the great symbols of Bilbao.
