Jim,  I'd love to see this in person.  This site must be quite difficult to capture, and there have to be many ways to vision and capture the salt flats.  I like what you have done here.  Does the image show what you want to convey?  Is this water or a dry salt flat or both?  Is this an HDR; do the clouds look overdone to you or were they this way in the real scene?  Nice image.  Larry

I'd like to see more contrast in the clouds, partly to set them apart more from the flats.  Along this line, perhaps a darkening of the entire cloud layer would be appropriate, as if you had been using a GND filter on  your lens.

Thanks to both of you for your helpful comments. This is not HDR. The clouds were very dramatic but I need to go back to my LR file to see what, if anything, I did to them.  In this part of the flats there was less than an inch of water, sort of a slushy like texture. Because I was traveling with a group, I was forced to shoot in midday and didn't have much time to experiment with different settings. I will play with it some more when I get a spare moment!

Jim, I shoot in raw and will often process scenes like this twice, then merge and blend the two layers with the gradient tool.  It's a good way to work on different parts of the photo that have distinct lighting or other characteristics.
