I suspect blue jays are large enough that they don’t back down when

confronted by most other birds. I also suspect they’ve figured out

they can take me down at any time. Comments and critique welcome.

Wow! - Lovely bokeh with the snow drifting by with nice clarity on the bird. You must have a photo blind or must be dressed up as "Big Bird" (*_*) to get this close with a 100mm lens. Congrats on a fine shot!

Tony,

Thanks.  The "Big Bird" disguise has crossed my mind.  I remember my working distance to be about 2.5 meters.  I got this lens because of the rave reviews about its macro capabilities and the price, but it has been touted as an excellent portrait lens too.

Very nice "portrait"! Blue jays around my feeder back down from the woodpeckers, even the little "downies", their 2 in. beak that sends woodchips flying is quite intimidating I imagine. I've watched the jays chase red and grey squirrels and even dive bomb the neighborhood cats. One of my neighbors told me of blue jays harassing whitetail deer near her feeder! Let's hope they never see Alfred Hitchcock's "Birds" :-)

I love that "hard stare"  I think he might have seen you as a piece of bread : - )

The little snow flurries add to its charm!

Compliments!

Laurent,

Thanks.  Your comments are much appreciated.  For some reason birds have inspired a different approach to framing.

Robert,

Many thanks.  Your work has gotten me staring at birds again.  Surely they owe me an image or two for all the expensive sunflower seeds I have been feeding them.
