Thanks for your take on this one.  First time using the D5100 for sports and I was generally well pleased with the results.  Shooting through plexiglass takes a bit of the edge off them.  Next time I'll jockey for a better position which will probably mean shooting over the top of the glass and therefore a higher camera position.  Life's a compromise.  Can't have it all!  Best, LM.

Thanks for your input.  In the print I made subsequent to posting this one I did clone out the stick as you suggested.  It really doesn't add anything to the image.  See, great minds think alike!  :-)  Best, LM.

Another dramatic action shot, though I always think that the audience makes for an interesting photo as much if not more than the main protagonists! In this one it's the lady with the expression of pure delight that for me, steals the show!

Good point.  In nearly all these shots there is another story, usually overlooked, in the faces of the fans.  Most are stoic.  This lady actually seems to be enjoying the game.  Thanks for your thought provoking observations.  Best, LM.
