I see in old people a potential for depth and the character of the aging process along with determination and the wisdom that comes with experience. Melancholy and despair are just too easy. You've captured the character in his face by echoing it with the lines in his head shawl. I'd rather dwell on his unique character than exploit the ease of melancholy but, seeking something much deeper here . . . the person himself . . . and when I do, I find it . . . and it can be found and seen in your photo . . . without the leading adjectives.
