Sibylla pretiosa 1
Artist: Igor Siwanowicz;
Exposure Date: 2009:05:21 09:45:32;
ImageDescription: An adult female Sibylla pretiosa devouring a wasp. A very delicately built praying mantis native to East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, etc.).To capture their pray, mantises use camouflage to blend in with the surroundings and wait for the prey to approach within the striking distance. The camouflage abilities of mantises are remarkable; they mimic flowers, blades of grass, twigs and green or dry leaves, not only with body coloration and shape but also movement. The powerful front legs are adapted for grasping and are equipped with several sets of sharp spikes and thorns. Mantis’s grasping action is incredibly rapid – the motion is barely a blur if it is perceived at all.;
