Viewed larger reveals a great amount of detail on the rock face. A beautiful image with nice tones and as Gail stated even the shadows give us some details. Nice work.

Holger

Thank you all for your kind comments!

yes, the shadows (both in the foreground and on the shadowed side of the face) were lightened a bit in Photoshop prior to converting it to bw.

Nicely composed, excellent light.  Lightening the shadow areas a bit was very appropriate.

Dear Stephen and Predrag,

thank you so much for both your comments.

Predrag I played with versions that had a greater contrast between sky and rock, but these versions led to the rock floating in a sea of black, and I wanted to keep some contrast between the sky and the tree on the right. Greater contrast in the rock face looked rather artificial in the full-size image. As a result I dialed it back a bit again. And, yes, there's always Ansel Adams looking over your shoulder when you take images in his stomping grounds. On the one hand I like his images a lot. On the other hand I'd like to take my own ...
