HI Sam,

Large firework displays are always interesting to see.

I noticed that many of your postings do reveal motion from the camera, as the fixed ground lights

have "hooked" shaped forms along with the fireworks themselves. By using a self timer, the vibration from a tripod mounted camera would be reduced, but the timing becomes an issue as to when a firework would be captured.  A cable release or remote control is the best way to do this. I have found that even a small Point and Shoot camera can vibrate unless the tripod is heavy duty.

Also, the f-stop becomes faster (like F/2.8) when the zoom lens is set to its minimal focal length.

Vibration is less amplified at shorter focal lengths, too.

Best Regards my friend, Mike

Hi Mike,

the very simple explanation is that I have taken these Funchal World-Famous New Year's Eve Fireworks shots on a large, moving, sea-plying catamaran with 105 people on board. Many other boats were on the sea. 11 Cruise ships were also anchored for the festive occasion.

You can imagine the movements!

I shot these firework pictures with the Canon IXUS as my CANON DSLR cameras didn't capture any shot that looked presentable. The pointer& shooter delivered at least something that could be recognized as fireworks.

There's also the aspect which makes these pictures different from 'normal' fireworks photos & that is the fact that the city is located on a large, steep slope. So, as the fireworks were shot into the air mostly at the base of the city's slope, they give the impression to have been taken from the air although they were shot from the sea.

I fully agree, these fireworks photos are not prize-winners at all, but witnesses of difficult & rather unconventional, basically impossible fireworks-photo-shooting conditions.

Thanks very much for your input!

cheers

Sam
