rarmstrong 0 Posted January 9, 2014 This was taken at zero degrees with 15 mph winds as the finch was trying to get to the berries. Thanks for viewing! Link to comment
cegeiss 6 Posted January 9, 2014 Great capture of the bird.Tthough I find the strong diagonals in the background a bit distracting. Link to comment
timothymuffitt 1 Posted January 9, 2014 Hi Richard, This is a very nice and interesting bird photo. The background light and patterns are very complimentary to the scene, as is the splash of red amongst the otherwise brown tone. The pose of the bird is special as well. Well done! rarmstrong 0 Posted January 9, 2014 Thank you, Christoph, Timothy and Saad! The background was caused by the wind blowing tree branches. Frankly, I was surprised that the bird and the berries were in focus.Dick Link to comment
jim_j2 9 Posted January 9, 2014 Richard, I find the background a tad bit distracting but, the position of the Finch feeding on the Snow topped berries/seeds and the overall composition more than make up for the distraction! Another fine detailed and natural result of the bird! Well done! Jim j. Link to comment
rarmstrong 0 Posted January 10, 2014 Jim,Thanks once again! I find the background more interesting than I expected. Gives me the feel of being out there...But, I also see how it could be distracting.Dick Link to comment
timothymuffitt 1 Posted January 10, 2014 There is an abstract quality to the background that, for me, really sets this image apart from a typical bird shot. It almost takes on the quality of a painting, and its abstactness draws all the attention to the bird. Also, it almost creates a three-dimensional feel! Notice how the bird pops out of the image. I find it quite striking!Tim Link to comment
jim_j2 9 Posted January 10, 2014 Hi again Richard, I've fallen into a trap, . . .One of those things that happen when one rates and comments under the "rate category" instead of opening up each individual photograph and reviewing/reading the previous comments as well as the posters "intro" for his critique request! Had I done so, I would have known and understood better how you obtained that background! Honestly, I originally thought it was done in post processing! And yes, even though I find it a tiny bit distracting, it really does stand out and make the Finch & berries pop in the overall view! And yes, I like it even better now knowing the background is more a natural effect from high winds!Regardless, still an exceptional photograph in my opinion! Cheers,Jim j. Link to comment

rarmstrong 0 Posted January 11, 2014 Thank you very much, Jim and luisa! The results have given me some ideas which will put me outside in the cold again looking for more opportunities...ah, the joys of photography:-)Actually, this was a very fortunate "catch" as the finches appeared unexpectedly going after these berries.Have a good weekend!Dick Link to comment
