Reminds me of one of my photos, also taken directly into the sun: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=16702248. I didn't remove the color information from mine, but it appears that you did from yours. It is surprising sometimes how well a photo can turn out when taken straight into the sun -- typically a no-no! It worked out well for you in this case.
