Popcornthulhu uln ron Orr'ev'l R'dnbaaa'chr.

Teensy sensor Ricoh GX100 P&S digicam with old Nikon SB-10 hotshoe flash, held in right hand, with flash bounced off white paper plate held in other hand. On-camera flash used to trigger a little Quantaray peanut remote flash about two feet to my left, set on top of my printer, partially diffused through another white paper plate which also served as a bit of a makeshift scrim. Popcorn Cthulhu was sitting on the leatherette cover of my Kindle Keyboard e-reader. The pool of light and vignetting were already there, due to natural light falloff, but I enhanced the look a bit in Lightroom. Otherwise, no special editing tricks.

Popcornthulhu is safely in a medicine bottle, awaiting bids from shamans and healers.  His sacred flesh is more precious than rhino horns, elephant tusks, newt eyes and moth balls.

Thanks, all, I'm a bit surprised this turned out as well as it did. The lighting setup was very makeshift (described in the tech details tab). I may revisit Popcornthulhu... if he doesn't get eaten first.

It helped that I didn't read  your title or introduction to this photograph before diving into my thought process about what it was. First you have to understand that I'm a little bit nearsighted, which would explain my first thought: "Is this a baby owl?" ... if I hadn't been wearing glasses.

Then I thought to myself it kind of looks like a puffy styrofoam spider. It was then I saw your introduction and title. Mystery solved. Lovely photograph, fun, beautiful macro, a joy to see and appreciate.
