Mark Z 371 Posted December 7, 2013 Lanny,You asked about the merits of cropping the original image. When I first saw the original, I was undecided if a crop would be better, but now that I see it, and can flip between the two versions easily, I like this framing best. It retains all the major players, and it eliminates the large black area from the right (which was more objectionable to me than the white vehicle).Jack's comments on the original concerning the meaning of the photo are interesting. He said "For me, a good photo is sort of open ended, always leaving room for the viewers own projections and interpretations. The mind looks for meaning when things are intentionally combined as in the above photo. There is, of course, none there. It is what it is..." I'll agree that the mind wants to find some meaning or discover the reason a photo was made. In some photos the elements appear so random, though, that I give up my deciphering efforts quickly. This shot approaches that point, but apparently it did not pass that point (for me) because I'm still here developing thoughts about it. Thanks for the puzzle. Link to comment
AmyHelmick 0 Posted December 7, 2013 In looking and II and III, I vote for this one. Like Mark said, it retains all of the elements. That bit of reflected white pole at the top adds something that I definitely missed when it wasn't there. Funny, I didn't notice that part so much in the OP, but after seeing the available comparisons it became more important. As to finding meaning...agreed, I think our minds are always looking for that or some relationship of the elements. In this piece, to me, it's more about balance and what is pleasing to the eye. "Pleasing to the eye" is so often an elusive and a moving target; but that's the magic of art to my mind.Amy Link to comment
Landrum Kelly 64 Posted December 10, 2013 Thanks to everyone, especially Amy, who suggested that the SUV be cropped in the first place. --Lannie Link to comment
