I mostly shoot handheld the with the Sigma 500mm F4.5 and the Nikkor 300mm F4. Sometimes I use a monopod but never tripods. Contrary to what many photographers think it is definitely possible to capture sharp images handheld even with the bigger primes. One must use relatively high shutter speeds when handhoding a longer lens and that requires somewhat higher ISO. The use of a tripod when photographing birds restricts photographers ability to move and react fast enough on many occassions.
I have been admiring your bird images and felt compelled to comment on the attention to detail and great sharpness you achieve.
The Camera/Lens combination seems to work very well, and your chosen perspectives are well thought out.
I notice the relatively high ISO that you use to achieve a fast shutter speed, and there is very little sign of noise.
I really like the composition and backdrop of this shot.
