Cathedral Cloister

margaret_s.

This cathedral was built over 3 centuries and completed in the 15th century. The detail of the gothic architecture is magnificent beyond description. You can actually see orange trees growing outside the windows (arches). Was actually shot with an Olympus point & shoot camera.

I like gothic architecture and I like your perspective and light.Maybe a litle bit high to see more of the vaults and less of the floor.

Looks great. I love cathedrals. I've been to a few in England and France when I was over there and the national cathedral in Washington. Could you post a large version please. It's so small!

I appreciate your effort both with the image and the historical background (not less the fact that it was taken near where I live).

But, IMHO, a small crop to concentrate the attention and eliminate distractions would help, as well as some underexposure to bring out more details corrcting, also, the cyan dominant.

Alberto, thank you for your comments and suggestions for improvement! The cyan tone was intentional for artistic effect (I failed to mention that.. was hoping nobody would notice ;-) I like the crop of the right side but I prefer to keep the foreground intact because it emphasizes the grandiosity of the hallway and gives it more depth. As for contrast, I would offer a compromise between my original version and yours. I've posted a copy of the original here :)

Hi Margret:

First, I think the human figure in the distance is an important element here -- it establishes a sense of scale that would have been missing if the cloister had been empty. Second, I confess to the same impulse as Alberto. I want to jigger the exposure to give the image more of the sense of alternating patches light and dark that I associate with great cathedrals. But even without jiggering, it does a good job of communicating the sublime intent of Gothic architecture. --Jim

The only reaon I didn't give this one 7's is because the person standing there. I don't think in this instance the person adds anything to the picture, in fact if anything detracts from the beauty thats allready there.
