I posted a shot from this roll last week, but I was not happy with

the prints I was getting. This shot is a tighter crop (lensed), and

more detail in the tree trunk is visible. The prints are

considerably better, as the tree details are sharper than the

previous image. Thanks for the feedback.

Great looking B&W from a color slide. Do you make B&W images from color slide all the time. Do you see much difference scanning in 16bit as apposed to 8bit. I gave up trying to do B&W with my digi camera as I could not get very good results. Could I use the same technique that you used on a digtal camera image or do I need the 16bits in the begining. I must also say that this is a great shot too. I like the way the tree balances with the big stone. Nice job.

16bit is not important (as far as I can tell). What it helps me with is extracting more subtle color shifts and detail from the original slide. On this one, the tree was completely in shadow during the original exposure. The only flash I had available was the built-in on my Canon Elan 7, so it didn't get me too far. So, the 16bit scan helped "dig" into the slide and pull out all the detail that was there. Using PS 7, one can only make certain changes to a 16bit image anyway--then you have to crunch it down to 8bit for layers, painting, etc.

Yes, you can use any of the techniques I used on this for color Digi pics. I use MANY layers and masks usually--this allows me to "go back" at any time. I use the Channel Mixers to get a feel of where each part of the image should go (Red for the sky, Blue for the Tree, Green for the midground, etc.) Then I creat masks as required so I can convert each segment the way I want it.

Send me an email if you'd like further clarification. I love to talk shop...Photoshop, that is. cc

Thanks Chris it seems to me that there is a lot more to make good B&W digitaly than I originaly thought. I shall try your techniques on some of my digi cam images maybe I get some good results I had kind of given up on digital B&W so I started making prints in the darkroom and scanning from them.
