jim_j2 9 Posted October 15, 2013 John, Portraits is an area that I don't normally venture into. However, as I'm going through the "Rate Category" of "All" with "No Nudes," I couldn't help but stop here at least to say that this is a very attractive model and I expect she would be very pleased with your results. This is a nice portrait with good lighting, details and appropriate DOF creating a very nice background! Regards always, Jim j. Link to comment

GerrySiegel 868 Posted October 16, 2013 My first reaction John was " Veronica Lake." But truly I think this has a nice delicacy and great makeup. Black rectangle on upper right I could do without, but that is me. Aloha, gerry Link to comment

scott_raber 0 Posted October 16, 2013 Wonderfully executed. This is an area I am very much interested in, yet entirely unpracticed. Tones, DOF, sharpness right where it should be. Link to comment

Guest Guest Posted October 18, 2013 I actually like the bit of dark picture frame on the right. It provides a nice suggestiveness and also gives a certain balance to the background. I like the strong line of the wall just above her right shoulder and the shimmer of her dark blouse as it catches the light. The pearls rest delicately on her breast. The statue in the background also provides a nice foil for the woman in the photo. Just a matter of taste, but the woman does look more like a model than a person, so there's a coldness or distance suggested and I'm not that drawn in to get to know her. Link to comment
John Peri 1,032 Posted October 18, 2013 Thank you for your interest friends. Fred G., that is an interesting comment, thank you. Irrespective of this model and so as not to be personal, I will just say that in general, I like to work with persons that have little to no experience of modelling because they do not have what I call "the prejudice of experience". Guest Guest Posted October 18, 2013 I do want to make sure you understand that I would never project about the personal or professional life of the subject of someone's photo. I don't know or care whether the woman in your photo is a professional model or not. Like you, I don't like when people get personal about those folks we photograph. What I was talking about was how she LOOKS in your photo, not who she is in life. I hope you find that helpful in a photo critique. I certainly mean no disrespect by pointing out how the photo, the pose, and the expression strike me. Being a portrait photographer myself, I'm well aware that much of the tone of the photo and even the feel of the person who's the subject is likely to be more about the vision, the setup, the styling, and the shooting by the photographer than it is about the person posing, though I also have found in my own experience that much about a portrait is a collaboration between photographer and subject. I'm talking about the photo I see, not the woman herself. Link to comment
John Peri 1,032 Posted October 18, 2013 Fred, I'm not sure I understand your reply or its purpose I fully sympathized with your initial comment and said so in my words. The majority though obviously not all my models are unprofessional. What I try to capture whenever possible is their fragility. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Thank you for passing by. Just to add that the fact that my models are sometimes not professional mean that I often cannot post the work. It is a shame, because I would like to be able to share the sincerity that emerges from some these images. Oh, and just an afterthought. It is correct that our work is often a reflection of ourselves, but that is true of our critiques too .. : -) Link to comment
