Wayne Sadler 562 Posted October 7, 2013 During my several trips along the Grand Canal in Venice, I struggledto get a good view of the statue at the top of the Basilica SantaMaria della Salute at the narrow finger of land between the GrandCanal and Bacino di San Marco. Until recently reviewing images, I didnot know my sigma 17-70mm lens reached far enough to show this art. Built on a platform of 1,000,000 wooden piles and constructed ofIstrian stone and marmorina (brick covered with marble dust), theBasilica Santa Maria della Salute is a Roman Catholic church built asan offering to the Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Health orDeliverance/Salute for the city’s deliverance from a plague beginningthe summer of 1630 in Venice that killed nearly 140,000 people.Comments and critique welcome Link to comment

mike_palermiti 2 Posted October 7, 2013 Hi Wayne,Excellent detail developed at 70 mm focal length. At this range , using F/4.5, even the clouds are in focus. This indicates that the subject was over 125 feet away from you.Your information provided is very interesting to read, too.Best Regards my friend, Mike Link to comment
Wayne Sadler 562 Posted October 7, 2013 Thanks, Patsy and Mike for your comments. I was a little surprised this image had this level of clarity. Not only because of the distance but I was traveling down the canal on a vaporetto (water bus) at the time. I guess dumb luck on the camera settings. Link to comment
