I could hardly believe my good fortune to be on the Grand Canal in

Venice nearing sunset. I knew my skills as a photographer had not

evolved to the point of deserving such an opportunity, but I had

confidence that editing software could salvage all except the gravest

of mistakes. I was in such awe of the scenery I could not think

straight. As the lighting changed I didn’t think to adjust ISO

settings to continue to allow for shutter speeds that I could continue

to handhold. I found myself at times holding my breath trying not to

add movement to the camera. Being excited and holding your breath is

not a good thing. Comments and critique welcome.

Hi Wayne,

A pleasant view. Like a postcard !

Try exhaling prior to pushing the shutter release .Another techniques is to NOT look at the scene though the viewfinder while pressing the release. These techniques and others have allowed me to hand hold 500 mm lens at 1/30 second, free standing.

Best Regards my friend, Mike

Thanks, John and Laurent.  I think the gondolier admonished me a couple of times leans too far over the side of the gondola going for angles even closer to the water.

Good advice from Mike. I was holding my breath so much and found that I was tensing up too much. I found that upon 'exhale' it was a whole new experience. (I hold my breath in the Dentist's chair as well! ;-) a very good capture with excellent compositional elements within. (BTW, I haven't got a 500mm, but with what I do have, I really haven't perfected 1/25th of a second handheld, but still practicing!!)

Thanks, Gail. I have a bad habit of holding my breath doing a lot of things.

Thanks, Tony. Good eye. I wiped my screen a couple of times before appreciating the bird.

Thanks, Ruud. Much appreciated.

Thanks, Patsy. Always appreciated.
