Seeing the trees in the forest is as if not more important that seeing

the forest through the trees. I try to focus on seeing and capturing

the detail around me. When the gamble works, we get paid off with

a keeper image. Please help me appraise this effort. Thanks in

advance for your visit and time. Larry

Larry, I'm a big fan of the "beautiful messes" that can be found in rainforests and old-growth forests.  One of my favorite activities is to walk along a trail through these forests looking for "aesthetically pleasing" compositions.  They're sometimes hard for me to find, and I might make 20-30 tries over a 2-3 hour period; if one or two end up being keepers, I'm happy.

The notion of going for "aesthetically pleasing" compositions is entirely subjective, and deciding what's "aesthetically pleasing" is equally subjective.  With that caveat in mind, from my point of view there are a few problems with this photo.  I don't find a strong central point of the photo, except perhaps for the horizontal mass of hanging moss (which I presume is on a limb or a small downed tree that never made it all the way to the ground).  Sometimes the whole frame can be seen as the central point of the photo, but I don't think that's the case here.  Also, there are a number of small elements that protrude into or distract my viewing eye, such as the out-of-focus limb in the upper left, the undefinable tangle of branches in the upper center, and the relatively bright but orphaned leaves in the upper right and lower right.  The background is entirely green and relatively bright, and it seems to all merge with whatever is closer to the camera; I think you need more variation in color and/or brightness.

While hanging moss is an interesting subject (IMO), it just has too much competition for the viewer's eye in this composition.  I think it's the lack of aesthetics that is hindering the image.  Just my $0.02.

Stephen, Your $.02 is worth at least $.10 to me relative to this image.  It's easy to get excited about an image to the point where we miss the details and elements you mentioned.  You are correct, and I appreciate your taking the time to write down your insights.  What do you think of the other forest images posted here?   Thanks again.  Larry
