I haven’t sold enough cans to buy a dedicated macro lens yet, but

spurred on by the likes of Mike Palermiti and Line Martel I am really

motivated to see my world as up close and personal as possible with

the equipment I have. I am not too pleased with this composition but

the image clarity is decent enough that I can appreciate the beauty of

this creature. I am shooting raw, handheld at a distance of about 12

inches from this rascal who chased me for a while before settling back

down to chowing . I am using a Sigma lens DC 17-70mm 1:2.8-4.5 macro

HSM. Comments and critique welcome.

Thanks, Patsy.  I just peeped at the rating of this image and had to laugh.  Usually I am my own worst critic, but not this time.

Hi Wayne,

A fine image seen.

Technically very well shot at 60 mm F/5.

Your lens bridges the short ratio zoom (about 4:1 ratio) which falls into the range that I recommend  for zoom lens users. Beyond this ratio, the compromises in the optical design for any zoom become greater. While I do not own this lens myself, I have tested several copies of this lens in my optical lab , and found the overall quality to be above average.

The Nikon D7100 does exceed the capability of this zoom lens, but that is not unusual for any zoom lens, as a high quality fixed focal length lens is at the top of the optical performance list.

Best Regards my friend, Mike

Thanks, Mike.  Good to know I made a decent choice with the lens.  I have been pleased with it. Oh, somehow the details abbreviated the f/stop.  I shot at f/5.6, trying out one of your recommendations for close focusing.
