Stephen,   It's interesting how the seasons and light effect images here.  I have a few in my portfolio too.  I like the light rocks, unusual for pre-dawn.  When were you there?  My pre-dawn adventure was climbing the hill in pitch dark with a flashlight, wearing a substantial coat in March.  Most interesting light.  Also, Lester Garcia has some excellent images from here.  Nice shot.  Larry

Larry, this was taken on 2/18.  The only "light" adjustment I made was to darken the sky, as if I had used a GND filter.  The overall exposure was fairly high, and the sky was so bright that the clouds were hard to see.  This exposure enabled some detail in the distant mountains to be seen.

Lovely - love the varying shades of color and the forms. Just enough sky (IMHO) to complete the picture if you will forgive the pun.

There is something about the soft morning light at Zabriskie that creates an almost painterly effect to the peaks.  My shots from there were like that as well.  I also think you have the right proportion of sky, and I think a simple sky here is best, so as not to 'compete' with the other elements going on.  Just beautiful....especially viewed large!

I've never been to this location but would like to someday.  From other shots of this location that I've seen taken with harsher lighting conditions the textures are more clearly defined.  With this soft flat light the subtle colours are more apparent though at the loss of those textures.  Best, LM.
